Surf Six by Into the Soup: Rosemill Studio Recordings
So what inspired Mark to move into the instrumental surf music realm? Credit his longtime friend and
musical compatriot Tony D’Addono, a renowned classical guitarist and Ventures fan who challenged
Mark to try his hand at composing an original surf tune. Diving headlong into the project, one song
quickly became six, with the music eventually being released as the EP “Surf Six” by his newly created
alter-ego surf band “Into the Soup” (featuring Benny Winkle on bass, Denny Winkle on drums, Lenny
Winkle on lead guitar, and Robby Winkle on rhythm guitar).
Internet and over-the-air surf music radio programs soon added it to their playlists and a review by
Music Connection Magazine gave high praise to the effort. “Surf Six” is available for purchase on
Bandcamp’s Rosemill Music page.

Surfin' with Winkle by Into the Soup featuring I Am Winkle |
I had a ball finishing this song in my home studio that we fondly call Rosemill Studio. This is the first in a series of six songs that I plan to finish for my musical project titled Surf Six. A special thanks to Tony D'Addono for all the encouragement and loaning me one of his prized guitars, "The Ventures" model Mosrite electric guitar. The dual lead parts were recorded using this guitar.

Sea Breeze Serenade by Into the Soup |
Homage to the 50s wrapped in a surf song ballad with a touch of Hawaiian guitar style playing, this is the second release of my venture (pun intended) into writing surf music. The leads were performed on a Fender Duo-sonic, rhythm parts on a Fender Jazzmaster, and bass parts on a Fender Mustang bass. Guitars were played through a Fender Super Champ XD and recorded direct using a 50W Weber Minimass (power soak).
So, with at least 4 more surf songs to come by the whimsical "Into the Soup", the boys in the band (Denny, Benny, Robby, and Lenny) will be kept busy recording at Rosemill Studios. Happy surfing!

Run Sammy Run by Into the Soup |
In 1968 I was 16 years old and my brother John and I were totally absorbed by the current music of the day. My parents were quite used to having music playing nearly all the time when in the house or the car.... at least when we were around. One summer day while sitting on the front porch with my Mom (one of the funniest people I have ever known) she asked me if I could play "Run Sammy Run". Not knowing any songs with that title and knowing my mother's penchant for twisting the English language a tad (a first generation descendant of immigrant Italian parents), I searched my memory for what song she might be referring to. I answered with a perplexed expression on my face, "Do you mean Walk Don't Run*?" With that typical innocent smile on her face when she knew she hadn't quite gotten something right, she said, "Yeah that one."
So after writing my first surf song all these years later, I had it in my mind from the start to write another one and dedicate it to my mother, and what better title than "Run Sammy Run," performed by my surf band alter ego, Into the Soup. Here's to you Mom, surf on...
*Walk Don't Run, became one of the most well-known instrumental guitar songs ever recorded after its release by The Ventures in 1960. It's considered an important predecessor to the surf rock movement that began in the early 60s. The Ventures went on to release the song four more times including the year 1968.

Camel Soup by Into the Soup |
This the fourth song in a series of six that I hope to complete for an upcoming EP to be entitled "Surf 6" by my imaginary surf band, Into the Soup. Originally, it was my intention to use the eponymous, Into the Soup, as the title of the song. But after my good friend, guitarist extraordinaire, Tony D'Addono, heard a demo of the song and said it brought to mind camels and the desert it morphed itself into Camel Soup. Besides his influence on the title, special thanks go to Tony for his insightful suggestions on the arrangement of the bridge section of the song. Also to Carolyn Asti for her whimsical artwork on the soup can that was used for the cover photo.

Tube Rider by Into the Soup |
Here they go again. The Winkle dudes have gotten together once again to create their special blend of surf magic, with the 5th entry in their upcoming Surf Six collection. This time it's surf guitar meets spaghetti western, as the dual lead guitars will transport you either to the inside of a breaking wave or to the saddle of your trusted stallion. Finding just the right acoustic guitar intro may have been the biggest challenge; the rest of the song fell easily into place.

Dance of the Mermaids by Into the Soup |
As the last weeks of the of summer 2019 were fading like the receding tide, Into the Soup gathered at Rosemill Studio to wrap up the last of their six-song instrumental project, Surf Six. The Winkle boys love a musical challenge and "Dance of the Mermaids" provided them with a departure from their usual hard hitting surf-guitar rock. Robby loves tremolo and he happily got his chance to use it on the rhythm guitar parts. Benny stretched his style with bass triplets and slide ups, while Denny's drums kept him locked into the beat. And Lenny couldn't help himself... rocking out on the lead instrumental section of the tune and putting the sauce on the final notes of the song. They hope you enjoy it as much as they did recording it. Surf's up, surf's on!
